SELF 2021 Virtual Event Details

We’re proud to announce our schedule for a virtual SELF to be held Saturday and Sunday this weekend.  This a relaxed affair with modest expectations that is totally free for anybody to attend.  We had tons of submissions for only a tiny number slots.  To compensate and gauge interest in frequently requested lightning talks, we are turning Sunday into a block of 15-minute lightning talks.  We are opening submissions for those lightning talks …. NOW.  We strongly encourage regular folks who haven’t spoken much before to step up and give a lightning talk a shot.  We’re low pressure, there’s no audience this year to give you stage fright, and we pride ourselves on always giving a chance for the local new speakers to have a shot to speak shoulder to shoulder with some of the big people in FOSS.  We’ll accept lightning talks on the same broad “FOSS centric but anything geeky goes” topics.   More details about lightning talk submissions (including our streaming platform for the event) can be found on the lightning talk submission page.

This year’s schedule is hightighted by another Opinion Dominion old hardware ragchew back by popular demand, Ask Noah Live, Interviews, One Hour Talks, 15-min lightning talks, virtual ham radio exams, virtual ham radio test crams, and a ham radio special event station.  Our full schedule at a glance:

IRC Changes

Effective immediately, #southeastlinuxfest and #self-offtopic in IRC Freenode are no longer operated by SELF. They have been taken over by the entity that has taken over Freenode. Do not use these channels or this network any longer. We have migrated to #southeastlinuxfest and #self-offtopic on Libera.chat. We have an unofficial contingent on OFTC as well

SELF 2021 Goes Virtual, SELF 2022 Dates

Due to restrictions that still maintain in place by Gov. Cooper in NC regarding mass gatherings we cannot hold the 2021 SouthEast LinuxFest in person. Existing guidance from the Governor’s Office doesn’t paint a favorable picture for even reaching limits of half of SELF’s normal attendance by the event. Vaccination availability and rates vary wildly state to state within our footprint and thus will also not be a holistic solution in time for the event. So, like last year, we’re going to do a virtual event stream. If you would like to speak on our virtual stream, please use this form to submit your talk. Stay tuned for an announcement in the coming weeks regarding our virtual stream details and hotel and final confirmed dates for 2022 (99% likely to be June 10-12). If you made a hotel reservation you can cancel that reservation. When we finish updating our contract with the hotel we’ll ask them to cancel and/or provide us a rooming list to contact remaining reservations to tell them to cancel.

SELF 2020 Virtual Event

We’re proud to announce our schedule for a virtual SELF to be held over the days SELF would have taken place this weekend if not for the pandemic. This a relaxed affair with modest expectations that is totally free for anybody to attend. The streaming starts Friday June 12th at 5:00pm ending with a live broadcast of Destination Linux at 3:30pm Sunday June 14th. Please note we have one prominent talk where we are soliciting nothing but user responses: Programs you use every day in Linux most people haven’t heard of. Details for how to submit your own bit of content to that talk are included in the schedule linked below. While this isn’t the “how am I suppose to choose between those talks!?” amount of content we’re use to giving you, we hope this will fulfill your intake quotas for FOSS content and also helps add a sense of normalcy to your life in turbulent times.

Before we get to all the relevant links a special thanks to those who helped make this streaming event possible:
– Speakers from the regular 2020 submission pool
– Ask Noah Show: Ask Noah Show @asknoahshow
– Linux Delta: Linux Delta
– Geek Beacon: Geek Beacon (Geek Beacon Discord)
– Presented by @nixiepixel and @kernellinux
– Volunteers and the usual SELF team

SELF 2020 Cancelled — Mostly

After completing initial selection of speakers for #self2020, a quick survey of the speakers for the event showed in a best case scenario over 1/3 of all speakers not making it, and in a remote-only worst case scenario where large events are still forbidden well over half of all speakers not making it. In addition we expect the various levels of .edu throwing in the towel until Fall to take a toll on staff, speakers, and attendees. So while what reality holds in store for us in June is still largely unknown, the existing headwinds that are growing have made it such that it makes more sense to cancel #self2020 and regroup and come back for 2021 regardless of what happens come June. And that is what we’re doing. We’d like to extend a special thanks to the Sheraton Charlotte Airport for being willing to work with us to reschedule our event for 2021. It will likely take another 2 or 3 weeks to finalize and sign the contract for SELF 2021 at the hotel due to normal negotiations and high workload among the event staff at the hotel with rescheduling events. If you have not cancelled any hotel room bookings you have done for SELF by the time our new contract is executed, you’ll likely be issued an automatic cancellation and refund upon execution of our 2021 contract which will void our 2020 room block. If you have any problems with cancelling a hotel room, please contact info@southeastlinuxfest.org and we’ll work with our hotel contacts to get you squared away. After the contract for 2021 has been finalized and signed we’ll update everybody with info for #self2021.

While there will be no typical #self2020, there is still interest and discussions in the background about holding a low key virtual event including some streaming content, interviews, conversations, and perhaps some bug fixing contests in FOSS projects. If you’re interested and/or have some provocative ideas to add, feel free to email them to info@southeastlinuxfest.org.

SELF 2020 Call For Speakers / COVID-19

First a reminder that our call for speakers closes on 11:59 PM ET March 14th, 2020. That would be this weekend!

Now onto some more serious matters: COVID-19. We’ve been asked by an increasing number of people if we will be holding SELF due to the coronavirus outbreak, as several major sporting events are already cancelled or being held in empty arenas. In addition, there are confirmed coronavirus cases in the greater Charlotte region including several people who tested positive and were unaware they were positive while transiting through Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Despite this we do not anticipate any disruption to the SELF 2020 event from COVID-19. A few things to keep in mind:
– COVID-19 is similar in transmission and seriousness to a bad seasonal flu. We expect like the seasonal flu for it to ease up with warmer weather. We expect June in NC to be “very VERY warm”.
– If you are sick by all means STAY HOME! Remember, we have a remote attendee option!
– In the unlikely event COVID-19 is still kicking around by the time SELF happens we’ll make sure to keep stockpiles of disinfectant and hand cleaning supplies and make them readily available throughout the conference venue. The same common sense practices you always do apply to reduce transmission: cover your coughs and sneezes, wash your hands frequently, and always wash your hands before touching your face.

SELF 2020: Bootstrapping

– We’ve reorganized the website
– The mailing list has been brought in house
– We’re in the process of moving the entire back catalog to Archive.org (about 80% complete). Note that some content will only be available on Archive.org, particularly from the previous few years. This is because some of our sponsor ads had licensed audio content they paid for to use in their ad. Despite disputing the automated take downs, YouTube sided with the copyright take down request. As a result we’ll make sure going forward all content is dual released onto Archive.org and torrent if necessary.
– Our theme for 2020 is a take off on 007: Chmod 777: License To Be Killed
– Our sponsor prospectus is available and propaganda be made available shortly.
– Our call for speakers remains open until 11:59 PM ET March 14th. Get your talk submissions in now!

Special Events as part of 2020:
– Ham Radio special event station W4L
— Operating on 80m, possibly 20/40m as well
– Software Defined Radio Workshop
— Bring your own rtlsdr (~$25), we’ll show you what you can do with it and what you can do on bigger hardware like the HackRF and iCom 7300. No license needed! For the non-radio and non-infosec types, come see what all the buzz is about with SDRs.
– Fiber Track
– Geeks With Guns (Meetup at local indoor shooting range)
– LAN Party
– World Famous Craft Beer Share
– FREE Ham Radio License Exams
– GPG Key Signing

SELF 2019 Is Almost Here!

In this final update before #self2019:
– In addition to our normal schedule we are releasing our detailed Fiber Track schedule, which includes kit details and kit pricing.  The ladies behind the Fiber Track have also created a Facebook group for those wanting to interact more with them.  Consider joining!
– A big thanks to RiffTrax for allowing us to screen Plan 9 From Outer Space (not Plan 9 from Bell Labs) as part of our Saturday night festivities at 8:00 PM at SELF.
– A reminder to those who can’t make it in meat space … consider attending SELF as a remote attendee.  You get near-live video from the talks at the conference, live coverage from the Ask Noah Show, and all for the excessively reasonable cost of $5.   (Why $5?  Because running A/V is expensive, and we think you should really attend because the “Hallway Track” is one of the most valuable parts of the conference.)
– Thanks to Linode, our Saturday party is sponsored.   If you want to get into the Friday Party though, since it is not sponsored at this time, you need to be a Ring2 or lower attendee (basically any non-free attendee type) OR bring some to share (click here to view our “inventory” collaborative doc).  Note that this document is updated rapidly over the final few days before SELF as people get growlers/etc from their local microbreweries.
– We have hidden an easter egg in our program guide.   If you’re at SELF, look closely.  You may be able to find loot!
– Interested in volunteering?   Shoot an email to info@southeastlinuxfest.org and we’ll have our volunteer coordinator reach out immediately.
– For any stragglers still looking for a hotel room … we recommend the Holiday Inn near the Sheraton Charlotte Airport.  While we were unable to secure a block with a rate, the Holiday Inn shares a shuttle with the Sheraton and so you’ll be able to shuttle over to/from the Sheraton for free during SELF.
– We have LAN Party info for our official game servers (only accessible from SELF’s on site network):
Team Fortress 2:  tf2server.self.lan:27015
CS:GO:  csgoserver.self.lan:27015
UT2004:  ut2k4server.self.lan:7777
Minecraft: mcserver.self.lan:25565
Factorio:  factorioserver.self.lan:34197
Call of Duty 4:  cod4.self.lan:28960
– PogoLinux has released the specs of their raffle prize at SELF:  a 20TB NAS!

– We will be running a ham radio special events station (W4L) at the conference including two full HF rigs.   We’ll be operating over multiple bands and modes (though primarily around 20m-40m).   Check our Twitter feed during the conference for the latest on where we are on the bands.   We’ll also be mailing QSL cards upon request after successful QSO.  If you’re lucky, you could get multiple QSL cards including the operator who was working the station!  Here’s what our QSL cards look like:

See everybody this weekend!

Registration Open, Schedule Released, Matrix Themed T-Shirt Art, New Public Telegram Group

We are pleased to announce registration is NOW OPEN for the SouthEast LinuxFest.   We have also released a schedule for all the talks and events at the conference.   In addition, our grassroots unofficial Telegram group is now official and can be reached through the super short URL https://t.me/southeastlinuxfest.  The Telegram group doesn’t replace our IRC Freenode channel, it’s just an alternative with a lot more animated gifs in it.   We encourage you to secure your hotel room immediately, as the rate will expire soon and we’ve already had to back fill our block with rooms twice.  We’ll be watching closely and working to re-add rooms whenever they run out as quickly as possible, so please contact us if you are unable to book.   Also, below is our concept art for our Matrix themed t-shirt.  This is the final design we’re sending to print:
